USS Midway & San Diego

It's feeling more relaxed and less hectic on San Diego than life in Hell-A.  We're sitting very near to the USS Midway (the aircraft carrier here) eating a spot of lunch after buying our tickets for the carrier today and also for the zoo tomorrow.

Our decision to walk was perhaps brave, as it was at least 6 miles walk just to get here (due to taking a bit of an unplanned detour - basically getting lost).  However, after using 3/4 of a tank of fuel in LA (due to everything being so spread out, and cramming in so much for two days) we are glad to have ditched the car in favour of legs. We will be ambling/limping back later after having a look around the carrier, exploring little Italy and eating dinner.

It's very hot here with not a cloud in the sky, but a slight breeze which makes it very bearable.

Well, the USS Midway was an experience. It felt familiar to be on ship, although easy to get lost on this one.  When you look at how they lived and the jobs on board, it reminds you that we don't know know what hard work is compared to those people!  You can see Emily in the Brigg (the ship's prison) in the photo.

After the Midway we wandered into little Italy and a bit blindly walked down the streets there - this was due to the over sensory experience on the Midway desensitizing our minds to any more visual stimuli.  We got to the end of little Italy and headed for home knowing we had another big walk ahead of us. The only point we'd stopped walking all day was to have lunch.

It took us another hour and a half at a quite a fast pace to walk back, so when we finally got there we sat by the pool for half an hour and just did nothing - bliss.

Our original plan was to eat in little Italy but by this point we couldn't be bothered to drive back in, find somewhere to park etc, and we'd passed some nice places to eat on our way back that were near to our motel.

So, we ventured back out and ate at Jimmy's Famous American Tavern where the food was spectacular and Em enjoyed a good tasting Caipirinha cocktail. We were right down on the harbour and it was like a cross between Port Solent and Fort Lauderdale - idyllic.

Tomorrow morning we are going to the San Diego zoo and then we make the 5 hour drive to Las Vegas. This will be the true test of the Mustang's fuel economy!
